In order to provide our families and students with opportunities to enhance their experiences, we offer both a parent support group and an adolescent after care group. There is no charge for these groups and we encourage our past and present clients to participate.
The family support group meets in our office on the second Tuesday of the month at 5 pm. The adolescent aftercare group meets at 4 pm on the third Wednesday of the month. Students that are home on break from their school are also invited to attend.
Families who have teens that are struggling with emotional and behavioral issues often feel alone in their pain. We find that if these families can connect with other families that are facing the same challenges, they are able to exchange ideas and find comfort in these relationships. In order to provide our families with the opportunity to connect with other families we offer ongoing parent support groups.
For adolescents that have attended a therapeutic or emotional growth school, we find that they need to stay connected to others that have had similar experiences and have developed skills for coping with their distress and navigating the world around them. Students often find themselves feeling more mature than their peers once they return from a therapeutic school. They are accustomed to talking about their feelings and having open dialogue with their peers, and they find that most other adolescents are not able to express feelings as easily or as openly. This can cause students returning from these schools to feel like they no longer fit in with their peers.
An adolescent support group for these students can provide the opportunity to talk about their transition back into "real" life, connect with others who are going through the adjustment, or have already traveled the bumpy road, and develop strategies for holding onto the skills they have learned and finding ways to relate to peers that allow them to maintain their emotional maturity and stability.
Some students may need to follow-up a therapeutic treatment program with a step-down placement. Ms. Hopper provides recommendations for the appropriate step-down placement, if needed.
